A unique and distinctive tea bowl constructed of half porcelain and half stoneware—the swirling blue spirals and accents serve to captivate the eye and the imagination, making this artist’s works instantly recognizable.
A native of Kyoto, Hashimoto Machiko runs a small studio and kiln where she creates a wide range of ceramic works—including functional pieces such as the chawan featured here—as well as a number of purely decorative and experimental pieces which most would agree are truly innovative. Hashimoto’s main goal is to achieve “connection” through her art in the hopes of breaking down what she perceives as artificial barriers between observer and that which is being observed. Although still a young artist, she has already received much attention and won several awards.
In perfect condition, this piece measures 4.1 inches in diameter (10.5cm) and stands 3.1 inches tall (8cm). It comes with a fitted wood box and an informational leaflet in Japanese and English detailing the artist’s background and her artistic vision.
