Majiayao culture, Banshan Phase 2600 - 2300 BC. Gansu or Qinghai province. 12 13/16" x 11 1/4" diameter, 13" across handles 7 lbs. (Thinly potted; much of that weight being due to a quantity of solidified yellow earth in the interior bottom.) A near perfect example of the most desirable Banshan form. A similar example illustrated in Regina Krahl, Dawn of the Yellow Earth, 2000, pg 63. Also see Gyllensvard, The World's Great Collections: Oriental Ceramics, 1982, vol. 8, pl. 6, showing an example from The Museum of Far Eastern Ceramics, Stockholm.
