Chinese blue and white lidded water jar for export to Japan. 17th Century. Produced at Jingezhen private kilns for the Japanese market at the end of the Ming Dynasty, this ware was known as Shonzui in Japan. Called a mizusashi, the water jar was used in the tea ceremony to supply water to cool the near-boiling water in the iron kettle. This particular shape is called mikan (tangerine).6 3/4" x 8 1/2" diameter. 5 lb. 2 oz.
