A good Pingyao cabinet- ca. 1750
Two-door cabinet, Shanxi province, Pingyao-style, mid 18th century. The front is decorated with paintings in gold against a red lacquered background. In addition darker colours are used to create an illusion of depth. The single panels on the sides are finished with a black lacquer. The left side panel is furthermore decorated with a painted medaillon which is an indication that this cabinet was once the left placed piece of a pair. The complete inside is finished as well with a black lacquer. There are two shelves under which is a storage compartment which can be closed with a slide. -The hardware seems to be replaced but is old and tallies in period and style. -Repairs on both front legs. -Repairs on the pivot-hinges. -Despite wear the paitings are well recognizable. -The black lacquer on the sides and inside is strong. Dim.: WxDxH 134x61(cap)x190cm Important: this cabinet is NOT re-lacquered with modern varnish, only waxed. The paintings are original, showing wear, but without restorations.
