A canvas ancestor painting- Shanxi 19th C.
A large size ancestor portrait. Painting on canvas. Shanxi province, second half 19th century. The relatively bright colors and the full background with curtains are typical for the period. Portrayed are six generations, three of them dressed in Ming style clothes and three in Qing style. The eldest ancestor on top must have been an important person judging his hat and rank badge. The moment rendered in this portrait lays roughly around 1750 if we count three generations from the start of the Qing dynasty. It was therefore not an actual moment captured, a snapshot, when it was painted. It took back to an earlier episode within the family history. Good original and fresh condition, not re-paneled and with the original rods and tunnels. Dim.: WxH 145x225 cm. 1.125 euro
