A mask carved from a mushroom, Eastern part of Nepal, Raj people. This type of masks hang in the houses to ward of evil and danger. They are called "fog-eaters" as they are credited with the power to keep fog away from the mountains; fog being a danger when one had to go out and travel. The use of this mask fits in a shamanistic type of belief that is still quite strong among the Raj. Dim.: WxDxH 28x14x22cm. In good condition with a smokey patina.
