A wooden mask from Java island, ca. 1950, carved from light wood. It is called wayang topeng, after the traditional dance performances based on the Mahabharata, Ramayana or stories on the hero Panji. The name of the character is written inside; Guru Jatiworono.. Under the buffalo skin on the forehead there is an older painted decoration visiible Some wear to the paint from use. Holes and tears to the black cloth. It is part of a group of masks that belonged to the same dance ensemble. Dim.: WxHxD 15x16x10cm
