The Photography of Dora Kallmus

Vassar College Art Gallery Poughkeepsie, New York 1987. wraps, 60 pp., with color and black and white plates. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Excellent and beautiful catalog on this important female photographer Dora Kallmus. Limited to 3000. Hard to find in this condition - Fine.

This catalogue presents what was then (in 1987) the largest survey of Kallmus' work to date and the first exhibited in the U.S. The exhibition found its impetus in the 1983 d'Ora show at Vienna's Museum of Modern Art, organized by Dr. Monika Faber. Dr. Faber also served as guest curator for the Vassar exhibition. The catalogue includes vintage portraits of dancers, actors, painters, and writers at the turn of the century in Europe.

Madame D'Ora (aka Dora Philippine Kallmus, Austrian 1881-1963)
Kallmus opened a commercial photography studio with Arthur Benda (1885-1969) under the pseudonym Madame D'Ora in Vienna in 1907. She began a distinguished career as a Viennese salon photographer, and became extremely popular among the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. In 1925, she moved her atelier to Paris, and during the 30s and 40s rose to international prominence through society and high fashion photography. She photographed Josephine Baker, Tamara de Lempicka, Alban Berg, Niddy Impekoven, Maurice Chevalier, Colette, numerous dancers, actors, painters, and writers.
