Three Navajo Button Bar Pin with Turquoise ca. 1940s
What a find! These darling little buttons were "saved" at some point by being soldered together into a small bar pin, which was popular ornamentation on women's dresses in the 1940s. The edge treatment on the buttons is actually rather unusual, with the stamp work giving almost a crinkled appearance. The turquoise couldn't be better: a robin's egg blue that's hard and very high quality. That's the color and type of turquoise most coveted by Native Americans. Lots of wear and love, for certain by its original Native owner. These bar pins and such are the items that "pickers" found on the reservations in the 1970s and then made their way into antique shops, or sometimes the Navajo themselves took them into pawn shops or the Gallup flea market and whatnot. This was in the drawer of an older friend of mine, who would wear it on her lapel for "dress up" occasions because the buttons were so pretty. Dimensions: Button bar is 2 inches long and each button is 5/8 inches in diameter.
