Unique Old Brass Pocket Match Box, ca. 1935
This lovely little metal box has a button on the side that unlatches the lid and flips the top open. It was to keep matches safe and dry in a gentleman's pocket, but one could put all sorts of other small items in it, from pills/vitamins to dimes for parking meters to paper clips -- be imaginative! And the container itself is lovely. Great condition, no dents or chips in the metal, and the lid fits snugly. I believe the unique line markings on the bottom are for striking the matches across and lighting them -- very nifty that it's incorporated into the design of the piece. There's nothing to go on to assist with dating, but I'm betting it's early 1900s. In the short while I've had it out, preparing to photograph it, many friends, neighbors and clients have come by and admired it. It seems everyone loves little boxes, and this one is particularly special. What a wonderful Father's Day gift it would make, or as restaurants have cut back on giving away matchbooks, it's once again a practical gift for its original purpose of holding and striking matches. That aside, it's just a beautiful vintage object, too. Dimensions are: 2 ¾ inches long and 1 ¼ inches wide.
