Oceanica tribal art japanese pottery
This carving is dated 1957 on the back along with a lot of writing that I can not decipher. I have seen a couple of these and they seem to be carvings made for sale at a temple? About 4 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" wide at the base, some flaking to the paint/lacquer, and a couple of hairline cracks. Inlaid glass eyes. Purchased from the Kura, another Trocadero vendor.
All Items : Vintage Arts : Regional Art : Oceanic : Sculpture : Pre 1960 item #1109847
This item was collected in the field in the 1970's by an Australian patrol officer. It shows considerable age, so it was well used before being collected. Note the insect damage on the front, still has some remains of pigment. Very large and heavy, about 43" tall. Iatmul people, middle Sepik river Papua New Guinea. Great tribal item.
