Anita Martinez San Ildefonso Pueblo Indian black vase
Anita Martinez was the granddaughter of Maria Martinez ( daughter of Adam and Santana ). She was not a prolific potter, and her work is quite rare. She worked in traditional shapes and designs and the pottery she made is some of the best -- perfectly executed and shaped, her finish rivals that of Popovi Da or Margaret Tafoya in Santa Clara. This pot is no exception, about 7" tall and 6" diameter, it is perfectly formed and the finish is a beautiful glossy deep black. It is the only Native American ceramic that I had kept for myself ( I even sold a documented Nampeyo! ) I liked it so much. But alas, it too must go. I paid $1200 in 2003 for it. Made circa 1985 or earlier. Signed by the artist.
