Upper Sepik New Guinea charm, finial figure, old tribal
Once in a while and object comes along that stumps me completely. This is one of those. I am pretty sure that it is upper Sepik river, that is is mid-2oth century ( say about 1950 or so ), about 7 1/8" long with a nice brown patina and some wear. Now what was it for? It was sold to me as a canoe paddle terminal, which it could be, but it is rather delicate, and the " base " has the same patina as the rest of the piece. I suspect it was used as a charm or amulet or decoration of some kind. Looks a bit like a bird's head. A nice old piece for a good price.
