Syrio-Hittite Terracotta Duck Rattle, 2nd Millennium BC
Hollow rattle in the shape of a duck with its head and neck turned around and resting on the back. The hand-modeled toy with indicated beak and eyes. The shape reminds of Syrian duck weights. (For a large duck weight cf: lot no. 145 in: Sotheby's New York, December 1995 sale.) Small terracotta figures representing both domestic and wild animals as well as humans have been unearthed in the western Euphrates area. For a comparable bird figurine cf. lot no. 338 in: L’Eufrate e il Tempo. Exhibition catalogue. Rimini 1993. Terracotta. Syrio-Hittite, 2nd Millennium BC. L. 7.9 cm (3.1 in). H. 5.8 cm (2.3 in). Intact. Tempered light clay with minor surface wear. Vent hole close to the short stemmed foot. German art market, from old French collection (references/data will be provided to the buyer).
