Hollow cast bronze figure of a baboon squatting on a stepped plinth.
The animal is seated on his haunches with the forepaws on his knees. The tail is drawn around the body to his right, the genitalia are exposed. The cape-like mass of fur is incised with dotted scales. Skin folds along the forepaws and on the sides. Crisp facial features with prominent supra-orbital ridges, deep set eyes and a dominant, protruding muzzle. Wearing a small lunar disk headdress. The baboon was sacred to Thoth, the god of wisdom, science and measurement. Bronze Egyptian, Late Period, 664-332 BC H. 9.2 cm (3.6 in) Fine condition. Tiny perforation at the neck level.
