Costa Rican Zoomorphic Tripod, ca. 1000-1550 AD
Nicoya-Guanacaste tripod of lentiform body narrowing towards the rim. On one side the applied head of an iguana (?) with verrucous crest and folded crop.
The bulbous hollow legs with slit vent holes and small rattles inside.
Ceramic.
Costa Rica, Middle Polychrome Period, 1000-1500 AD.
H. to head 7.5 cm (2.95 in)
W. 11.7 cm (4.6 in).
Pristine condition. Intact. The body enhanced with red and black varnish, the animal’s head with remains of white pigment.
