Attic Red-figure Lekythos with Deer, 420-400 BC

Squat lekythos decorated with a deer crouching to right. The slightly raised head and the wide open eye confer the animal an alert gaze. The animalís tail is indicated, the left forepaw raised.
Careful rendition of the fur with tiny dots along the spine and filling dots arranged as pairs.
Reserved ground line below, a small volute on the left.
Closely related to a lekythos attributed to the Mina Painter: Cf. Beazley archive no. 230137 and Beazley, J.D., Attic Red-Figure Vase-Painters, 2nd edition (Oxford, 1963): 1366.18.
Fine quality and condition. Spout and handle restored.
H. 7 cm (2.8 in)
English collection A. W., acquired 1970 to 1980. Thence French art market.
