Squat lekythos decorated with a recumbent sphinx with raised forepaw.
Nice rendition of the female head and of the feline body. The front of the raised wings with tiny dots. The tail with a bushy tag.
Published 1936 in: CVA Poland, Collections Diverses, 24, pl. (106) 1.17. Also Beazley-Archiv vase no. 1011919.
Ceramic
Attic, late 5th century BC
H. 9.3 cm (3.7 in)
In ancient times a hole was purposely drilled in front of the sphinx to prevent that the vase could be reused.
The decorated area has survived passably while the rear of the vase is spalled. Handle reattached.
Ex Choynowski collection, Warsaw (Poland), item no. 31764. Acquired prior to 1936.
