The red-figure lid with two female heads between palmettes and stylized volutes.
The ‘Ladies of Fashion’ are nearly identical and wear ornate saccoi leaving a bun projecting at rear, a spiked stephane, earrings and necklaces.
The lid’s knob with radiating strokes on top. The black-glazed dish has an inset flange to receive the lid and is set on a high hollow foot. Nice example of the type.
Ceramic
Apulian, ca. 330 BC
D. 9.5 cm (3.75 in)
H. 9.6 cm (3.8 in)
Intact with slight wear of the glaze. Small chip out of the lid’s knob. Fine condition. Added white ‘gilded’ with dilute brown glaze for the details of the headdresses and the jewelry.
