| Larger late Roman period head of a bearded man with asymmetric features. Unlike other heads the clay of this one has been mixed with chaff/hair to make it lighter and better workable. Cavities left by the burnable material. The style fits into the expressive tradition after 300 AD to Byzantine times. Influenced by early Christian theory of the philosopher Plotin who stated that interior values had to be preferred to superficial beauty (soul vs. matter). Terracotta. Egypt, Roman to early Byzantine, 3rd/6th century AD. H. 6.6 cm (2.6 in), H. with stand 14.2 cm (5.6 in). Broken at the neck level. Surface chipped. Israel Antiquities Export Approval. | ||
