Etruscan Impasto Ware Kyathos, 750-650 BC
Rare Etruscan kyathos with shallow bowl and tall vertical handle in the shape of a stylized animal head with pronounced horns. The flat base shows an impressed cross and dots. Kyathoi were used for drinking wine at symposia held by the Etruscan elite. The symposium was a Greek custom adopted by the Etruscans, who depicted these banquets in paintings on the walls of their tombs. For identical cups cf. no. 182-183 in: J. Jucker. Italy of the Etruscans. Mainz 1991. The brownish Impasto ware pottery was the precursor of the black-shard Etruscan Bucchero ceramic. Ceramic, Impasto ware. Etruscan, 750-650 BC. H. handle 8.8 cm (3.5 in), D. 8.6 cm (3.4 in). Intact and of museum quality. Carefully smoothened surface. A craze at the base of the handle fixed, small chip out of the inside floor. Dark brown, nearly black impasto with soil deposits. Swiss art market (data will be disclosed to the buyer)
