Greek Apulian Guttus with Lion Head, 325-300 BC
Guttus of shallow rounded cushion-like body with flattish closed top. The medallion is showing the frontal head of an archaic fashioned lion. From the blurred details can be deduced that the mold was in use during a long time. Stepped ring foot, a loop handle is set on the shoulder. The spout with rounded rim-molding. Narrow gouged groups of verticals and crossed x-motifs on the body. Ceramic. Apulian, 325-300 BC. H. 9 cm (3.5 in), D. 10.4 cm (4.1 in). Intact, except for a restored fragment out of the spout rim. Black glaze slightly dull. Some wear in places. Root marks on the reserved bottom. Formerly in a public collection in Zurich; an old collection label reading Gewerbemuseum Zürich N. 2053. Swiss art market (Provenance will be provided to the buyer)
