| The head showing a calm smile, the gently curved eyes recessed to bear inlays. The king is wearing a wig which is topped by the annular base of a crown. On the forehead a square cavity to insert the uraeus. The head is made of carved stone which is eroded in places. The white layer covering the head was painted; small remains or red pigment can be appreciated on the lower lip. This head is a kind of sculptor's model. For similar heads cf. London, Petrie Museum, UC14854 or Petersburg, Ermitage, inv.188830. Stone. Egyptian, 26th Dynasty to Ptolemaic, 664-31 BC. H. head 5.5 cm (2.2 in), H. with stand 14.7 cm (5.8 in). Limestone with partially preserved gypsum layer. The bridge of the nose is chipped off in places. The Inlaid uraeus and the eyes lost. Dutch art market (Provenance will be provided to the buyer) | ||
