Roman Egyptian Head with Elaborate Hairdo, ca. 100 AD
Egyptian female head with slender face and an elaborate hairdo showing horizontally arranged curls topped by a coil of hair. The hair at the back of the head is braided. Similar arrangements of the hairdo are common during the Trajanic period. For a related head in the Louvre cf. item no. 712 in F. Dunand. Catalogue des terres cuites gréco-romaines d’Egypte. Paris 1990. Terracotta. Egyptian, Roman Period, ca. 100-150 AD. H. 7.4 cm (2.9 in), H. with stand 10.6 (10.6 in). Broken at the neck level. Left side of the face worn. Composed of two halves, the pierced earlobes and a hole on top were intended as vent holes. German art market (date will be provided to the buyer)
