| Couple of substantial volutes from an Apulian krater showing apotropaic Medusa masks on each side. The heads of the Medusa with classical features and traces of white pigment for the skin and black glaze details. The casket-like hairdo with striated strands of hair, parted and with a v-shaped diadem at center. Deep volute drums (13 cm - 5.1 in) with vent holes on the sides. For closely related masks (with flowers over the forehead) cf. vase no. 574 attributed to the Painter of the Macinagrossa Stand, associate of the Baltimore Painter, in: A.D. Trendall, A. Cambitoglou. Second Supplement to the Red-figure Vases of Apulia. Vol. 2. London 1992. Ceramic. Apulian, 325-300 BC. H. 17 cm (6.7 in) and 13 cm (5.1 in). Fragmentary, both items on stands. Small fragment out of one roundel, not affecting the face. Few crazes fixed. Black glaze details painted over the white ground lost. Remains of red pigment inside the strands.
