| Large hand-modeled Boeotian centaur with raised arms. Vivid rendition of the male head with pointed beard, prominent nose, neatly impressed eyes and wild hair. The elongated body of the horse with remains of white pigment and red varnish stripes. The color decoration is reminiscent of the 7th century BC Boeotian production. Legs and tail stand stiff completing the overall rigid appearance of the horse. For related centaurs cf. figs. 11-15 or 82 in: Miklos Szabo, Archaic Terracottas of Boeotia, Rome 1994. Terracotta. Boeotian, 600-550 BC. H. 12 cm (4.7 in), L. 14.4 cm (5.66 in). Fine archaic example of rigid appearance. Chest, tail and two legs reattached. Point of one leg restored. Raised arms and hairdo chipped. Faint traces of the original polychromy. Soil deposits, root marks. Private collection USA (provenance will be disclosed to the buyer) | ||
