This Stunning Oil on Canvas by Hélène De Lajallet of "Urn with Flowers" is in Excellent Overall Condition,c.1900. Featuring Soft Color, Brilliant Light this breathtakingly beautiful floral still-life can be considered among Hélène de Lajallet's most important compositions. The sensitivity of the paint handling and the attention to detail show de Lajallet as a painter of extraordinary skills. She was born in 1858 in the small town of Saint-Jean d'Angely in the Charente-Maritime area of France and it appears showed an early aptitude for the arts. At some time during her teenage years she moved to Paris to study painting. She is recorded as attending the ateliers of both Georges Jeannin and Benjamin Constant, two of France's most eminent art teachers of the time. Jeannin is remembered primarily as a painter of flowers whilst Constant worked predominantly on genre painting. Both of these artists would influence the young de Lajallet but perhaps Jeannin's contribution would appear, in retrospect, to be the more profound.
Her first major success came in 1883 when she was invited to show at the Societaire des Artistes Francais in Paris, an important and prestigious venue of the time. Her work over the following years mostly consisted of floral still-life compositions but she is also recorded as being a `paysagiste' although few of these landscape works have survived. Later she married and took the title Mme. Baude de Meurceley although she does not seem to have exhibited under that name leading one to suppose that she retired as a professional artist on the occasion of her marriage. A death date for Hélène de Lajallet is unknown. Her works today are housed in a number of French museums including a work entitled `Automne Fleuri' (Autumn Flowers) housed at the Musée de La Rochelle in France. Listed in E. Benezit
