Herakles (the young Hercules) strangling two serpents. Herakles was the son of Zeus and the mortal Alkmene. Hera was jealous of her husband's infidelity and tried to kill the infant by sending two snakes upon him. However, although Herakles was a little child he strangled both snakes and her plot failed.

The original painting is in the House of Vettii in Pompeii. It belonged to two wealthy merchants, Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva. The painting is still in its original position and the skillful reconstruction of the apartments make it one of the most interesting houses to visit in the whole town.
