Sarcophagus Lid With Glyphs/Ba Bird/And Gods! 525 B.C.!
Sold!

Relics of the Nile is thrilled to present this outstanding large Late Dynastic sarcophagus lid. The lid is beautifully formed with distinct angled features. The sides and top are wonderfully formed with a hollow center underneath the lid, which originally housed the wrapped mummy. The original mask remains with excellent cosmetic detail in black and white with red lips. The yellow face indicates that the original owner of this lid was a female (red was reserved for males). The tripartite Nemes headcloth still surrounds the mask with a very large collar around the neck. The winged goddess Isis (or Ma'at) guards the chest with the Solar disc, flanked by two royal uraeii, adorning her head. She holds the feathers of justice in her hands. Beneath the collar is also a wonderful lotus design and several registers of very clear hieroglyphic text. Perhaps the highlight of the design is the depiction of the "Ba" birds with a gold symbol ("nub"). The sides of the lid are flanked with beautiful large figures of the god Horus measuring 4.5" x 6" each. The piece remains brightly colored with no retouch or restoration. Measuring a simply stunning 39" tall, 19" wide, and 8.5" in depth, this is nothing short of a must-have addition to any Egyptian collection. Egypt, 27th Dynasty. 525-405 B.C.
