Roy Lichtenstein Abstract
less than

This Abstract Expressionist painting dates to 1957, and it has a partial signature on the lower left corner. It measures 38" x 28" and has a small amount of paint loss. Notice the bright and unique colors and with heavy inpasto brushwork. On 5/3/04, I presented this painting to the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation for review where I had a brief meeting with the assistant director. The painting was not confirmed, however, the painting will remain under review and evaluation. In addition, we have observed some unique bright colors on this painting and its signature. We feel the bright colors were created with DayGlo paint. This painting was purchased at the Estate sale of Dr. Smith in Columbia, SC. Dr. Smith was originally from Philadelphia, Pa. We have matched the signature on this painting to a "Study for Tension" 1964 a pencil on paper signed by Roy Lichtenstein. This pencil study is from the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein and is in the collection of the Modern Museum of Art. This signed painting is in original untouched condition with a small amount of paint loss. The colors and the composition in this painting matches RL's of the late 1950's, and the brushwork matches his Pop Art of the 1960's. R.L lived in Cleveland Ohio from 1951-1957. In this six year period his work was based on cubist interpretations of other artist painting's such as Frederic Remington. In 1957 he moved to upstate New York and he adopted the Abstract Expressionism style, which was a later conversion to this style of painting. His paintings of this period were shown in 1959 to an unenthusiastic audiance. Chemical Analysis of the paint shows an average of 5 separate tests were Sulfur S 12.4%, Titanium Ti 9.4%, Lead Pb 4.5%, Calcium Ca 3.3%, Zinc Z 1.8%, Potassium K 1.7%, Cadmium Cd .7%, and Iron Fe .5%.
