ARIE VAN SELM
Born in Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, Arie Van Selm grew up in the home of Dutch
impressionist artist Willem Witsen (1860-1923). After finishing his
education in Amsterdam, he traveled through Europe and settled for a short
while in the South of France. Here, Van Selm took inspiration from the
legacies of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso.
Returning to the Netherlands, Van Selm immersed himself in the challenging
iconography and heavy brushwork of the Dutch Cobra movement. During this
time, he exhibited his work at such galleries as D’Eendt in Amsterdam and
Delta in Rotterdam. Subsequent trips to Kyoto, Japan, also influenced his
brush stroke and evolving conceptual style.
Inspired by the contemporary swerve visible in studios and galleries
throughout the city, Van Selm moved to New York in the eighties.
He lives in New York, 1988 - 1991.
