The size of Fukusa: 12 1/2" Wide x 13 1/4" Long. Beautiful Japanese Antique Fukusa. Fukusa is made from fine navy blue silk. It has fine works of gold thread embroidered in the design of Turtle in the sea which showing the water movement and splash. The turtle(Kame) is symbol of long life and happy occassion. The brown emboridered on turtle's part is done in different technique than thread works. The condition of Fukusa is excellent, no tear, no torn, no stains, and no thread loose. All gold threas are intact. The backside is done with fine Chirimen(silk crepe). The red thread is Shitsuke Ito which is temporaty thread when both(front and back) are sawn together. This case still attached. Many time it will be removed. The dating from Meiji (1868-1912). Fukusa is used for to covere on a fit item or money envelop during its formal presentation, such as wedding presentation etc. They came in different size depending on the occasion. Japanese has a lot of ceremonial procedure during Japanese life, especially in old time as Meiji and before. They use only special occasion so they keep good condition. Chirimen was made by very pains taking process. It only used by wealthy people in Meiji time. |
