The size of Kochi Bowl: 7" Dia x 4" High. Beautiful Japanese Kiyomizu Yaki(Kyo Yaki, Kyoto Ware) Kochi Bowl made by Togyoku. The bowl is made with earthenware. It has wonderful shape and quality. The painting is done with raised (moriage) painting with Ho-O bird (pheonix) design with Kiri design. In ancient story, Ho-O bird is the symbol of empress only stop at Miki(beautiful tree) which is Kiri. It has wonderful color of mauve grey on Ho-o and blue, green and white. It came with tomobako(wooden box). Also yellow cotton cloth. Outside said from left, Ki Kochi Ho-o, Kashi Hachi(confectionery bowl), Heian Togyoku Zo(Kyoto Togyoku made) and his seal. The seal on upper right said Rakuto Kiyomizu Yaki. Inside back cover written is just the occassion of Japanese company's new building celebration. The condition of bowl is excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Little spot on foot rim from original kiln. It has marking of Togyoku in the bottom center. Dating the bowl from 1950-1960. Togyoku (Kitamoto Togyoku), 1st was born in 1884 at Ishikawa Prefecture, 2nd was born in 1918, 3rd was born in 1942. Togyoku first established his kiln in Kyoto, 1924. They have received many award and merit. This lovely Kochi bowl was made by Togyoku 1st, or possibly by 2nd. The name of Kochi( or called Kouchi) Yaki originally came from Kochi of Vietnam or Southern China. It came from the ware which were traded as Kochi China. However, there is national treasure in Shosoin temple of Nara, Japan which they own Sansai(three color) work. Song dynasty(960-1279) and Yellow Nanking from Qing Dynasty so called Kochi Ware. These type came into Japan and Kyoto artist has developed their own technique, such artist including Mokubei, Eiraku and other loved by Japanese people. |
