The size of Koro: 5" High x 4 1/2" Long x 3 5/8" Wide. Beautiful Japanese Kyo Yaki Koro by well known artist Nakamura Toukou. The Koro is made with white earthen clay body like Kyo Satsuma body with crackle glazing in the shape of Japanese Fukiya house shape. It has Sakura flower and tree design done in gold and green gosu works beautifully painted around the house. The roof both end are opened for incense smoke escape. Oneside house window with frame work line showing which my photo does not show. It has the seal marking of Toukou on the bottom. It came with Kiri wood Tomobako. The top cover with title, House shape with cherry blossoms flower design, Koro. Inside with Toukou signature and chop sealed. The condition of Koro is excellent, no chip, no crack and no damage hariline other than normal crack glazing. It appear Koro never been used. Dating from Taisho period, 1915's to early 1930's. Nakamura Toukou(or called Toko) First Toukou was called Aoya Genemon, he was born 1789 in Komatsu, near Kutani area originally. In 1799, Lord Maeda Yoshiyasu(14th from Maeda Toshiie) ordered to redevelop Kutani Yaki, so he served as their Oniwayaki(in circle) artist. Later years, in the end of Edo, Meiji Ishin(before Meiji), he has moved into Kyoto area. Third Toukou moved to Kyoto as well as his kiln Aoya, and devoted Kyo Yaki. This Koro was made by Toukou 4th or 5th who worked in Meiji into Taisho period. There is 6th Aoya Nakakura Toukou is living and working now as inheriting Toukou name. |
