Very Rare Nezumi Shino Chawan Cross Design

The size of Chawan: 5 1/8" L x 4 5/8" W x 3 7/8" H. The most unusual Japanese Chawan, Tea Bowl ever seen. The chawan was made by Nezumi Shino. One of Shino Yaki. Nezumi which is grey color so this is called Nezumi Shino. The design of cross and other design are done with Oniban glazed and removed design area, later it glazed with feldspar which leave the white design area line inlaid. This Chawan is larger than regular Usucha chawan. It is used for Koi-cha(thick tea). The kiri box is provided later year. Outside writing said, "Nezumi Shino", then, "Kirishitan" which is Christian in English. The original owner of this Chawan is not known. During Edo period, third Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu prohibited the christian practice in Japan after Toyotomi Hideyoshi era became Christianity spreading around so much which Iemitsu thought the threat to Tokugawa government, he prohibited. So many Kakure Kirishitan(hidden christian) went to practice their christian faith by underground activity. Many time, cross are behind regular Buddha figure. This may be used for that communion purpose in Edo. During Edo, if they found you are Christian, then you will be prosecuted. This will make more interesting for this Chawan. Dating the chawan from Edo period, not sure earlier or late Edo. The condition of Chawan is excellent, the finish of surface of Chawan is naturally caused with some dimpled area. It is from the nature of Nezumi Shino. One spot at the rim area is from original Kirin spot with burnt color.
