An important large cylinder seal in pretrified Lapis Lazuli, dating to c. 800-600 BC. as the likely period of manifacture.
The seal is large and quite massive for it's fine type and thus rare and remarkable! The seal depicts Ishtar facing right with alter. To the left of Ishtar a hero is fighting two mythical creatures. Excellent workmanship, the most artful style of the period and a complex scene with many fine details. Size: 30 mm. high and 14 mm. thick, so it's quite large in hand. Condition: Nearly superb - top condition and unusual for a Lapis seal - sharper than the impression in wax indicates. A top seal! Ex. The Kjersgaard Collection, published in the book 'Cylinder seals as an object d'art' (as seal #28, p. 93) By E. Rasmussen 2010. |
