VERY RARE ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MID TO LATE 16th CENTURY APOTHECARY BRONZE MORTAR
Made 1550-1580 and likely of Italian origin.
Excellent artistic craftsmanship with pleasing detail & finish. Excellent proportions. Conical body w/ wide flared & profiled lip and curved foot rim. Charming stylized snake handles (to carry and spin). Excellent quality heavy bronze with superb deep and colorful patina. Noticeable and strong traces of repeated use & cleaning and prolonged exposure, consistent with age, style and purpose.
Size: 12 cm. wide in diameter, 13-14 cm. including the handles. ca. 8 cm. tall and very heavy weight due to the massive casting: Nearly 2 kilograms!
