A rare and exceptional macehead, Mesopotamian / Sumerian, 3rd. Millenium BC.

The macehead of a compressed round form with carvings in relief of two coiled snakes, representing the Sumerian God, Ningizidda. The god, either called Zu or Ningizzida, is lord of the watery abyss from which mortal life arises and to which it returns.

Size: 82 mm. in diameter and 181 grams.

Condition: Choice with some surface chips on the reverse and finely patinated surfaces.
