A love large Guttus with a high relief head of Gorgoneion, Campania / Apulia in Sothern Italy, 4th.-3th. century BC.

A finely modeled Gorgon or Medusa head in relief occupies the central portion of this guttus.

The head of the Gorgon / Medusa was featured on the aegis (shield) of the goddess Athena and it this case the portrait actually resembles the goddess herself. A long spout, ridged at the top, and a short handle are characteristic of this type of vessel, as is the fine incising on the sides. Area of orange slip decorate the base. The Guttus was a filling-bottle for oil lamps.

Size: 14 cm. wide and 12,3 cm. high.

Condition: Superb! Terrific silverish black glaze and perfectly preserved.

The size and condition and the lovely style of the head, makes this the best Guttus we've handled so far!

Provenance: West-German Private Collection (H.W.), aquired from old belgian Collection
