| A museum quality Anatolian stamp seal, dating to the Hittite Empire in mid-later 2nd. millenium BC. A superbly decorated seal in hard blackstone. The seal is shaped with a handle as a stud with an engraved six-rayed star on top. The seal measure 24-25 mm. across and is c. 16-17 mm. high. The iconography of the seal itself is typical Anatolian Hititte with a large stag standing on it's hindlegs and a smaller stag below the frontlegs of the large stag - as a mother protecting her offspring. The studded stamp seals was made later than the simple style stamp seal with no handle. There's evidence to suggest that the stamp seals with studs were of Cilician or Cappadocian origen. Reff. 'Hittite seals with Particular reference to the Ashmolean collection' by D.G. Hogarth. Provenance: Erlenmeyer collection 10/21/99. | ||
