HUGE ASSYRIAN QUARTZ CYLINDER SEAL! A very large and thick cylinder seal, dating to the Assyrian period, late 2nd. millenium BC Contest scene between a 4 winged Hero figthing with two sfhinxes, representing evil spirits. the scene is inspired by the Gilgamish 'master of animals' tale. This seal is 20 mm. thick(!) and 37 mm. tall. 19th. cent. collection mount with the letter 'RR'. Condition: Choice! typical Assyrian style. Provenance: Ex Oliver Antique. Ex Swedish private collection - purchased during the 1950s at Viktoria Lindströms Antikhandel, Stockholm. Her business card in the collection together with notes. Ex late 19th. century collection, note the old costum made brass mount with collection number (letter) hand-chiselled.
