| This extremely large bowl measure some 350-360 mm. in diameter and is 97 mm. high. Perhaps the best of all the ceramics we have sold from a private danish collection. It combines huge size, wonderful style and colours and choice condition. Samanid dynasty of Nishapur, 892-999 A.D. A huge museum quality ceramic bowl, dating prior to 10th cent. A.D. Earthenware, engobe, underglaze slip-painted. Attractive decoration with kufic letters in an interiour band and decoration in brown and red. Bowls with bold inscriptions in the so-called kufic angular calligraphy were apparently produced in the important ceramic centers of Nishapur in easternIran. The text often contains a proverb in Arabic or a series of wishes. This large bowl, which was used to serve food, is one of the most accomplished works of the type. The bowl represents the first revival of the traditional art due to the rise of the native Islamic dynasty of the Samanids. A most important bowl that shows the true glory of the simple artful style that owes much to the Sassanian art and to the earlier cultures of the area. Size: 350-360 mm. in diameter and is 97 mm. high. Huge bowl for the type and period, very rare! Condition: Choice! Minor restoration, early Islamic ceramics of this type are always restored to some degree. In any case nice preservation for the type of item and period! Wonderful glaze with a mulitude of small crackles but no defects. Provenance: Danish Private Collection. Est. $2500-3000. | ||
