FINE ISLAMIC 'SARI' CERAMIC BOWL WITH BIRD
A rare and impressive ceramic bowl, white background with black, red and green, dating c. 10th. cent. A.D. Islamic bowl from Sari.

Earthenware, engobe, underglaze slip-painted. The glaze is with a mulitude of small crackles - very convincing antiquity! The bird in the center is a typical hallmark for Sari, The plates from Abbasid and the following Sari ware, exhibit a popular decorative style, motifs that originated from nature- leaves, birds and flowers. As their palette of designs developed, so did the decorative and sophisticated appearance of their ceramics.

The bowl represents the first revival of the traditional art due to the rise of the native Islamic dynasty of the Samanids. A most important bowl that shows the true glory of the simple artful style that owes much to the Sassanian art and to the earlier cultures of the Iran.

Size: 200 mm. wide and c. 70 mm. high.

Condition: Superb! We believe it's completely unrestored. In any case very unusal preservation for the type of item and period.
