A huge and exceptional Nishapur plate, dating Samanid dynasty of Nishapur, 892-999 A.D. The plate is decorated with kufic inscription in red-brown on a creamy white background, Ceramic serving plate or dish, Earthenware, engobe, underglaze slip-painted. The glaze is complete with a multitude of small crackles - very convincing antiquity! Wares including bold black inscriptions in the so-called kufic angular calligraphy were produced in the important ceramic centers of Nishapur in eastern Iran. The text often contains a proverb in Arabic or a series of wishes. This plate measure app. 280 x 40 mm. Condition: Choice. Light restoring at the center, the entire remaining surface is completely ancient with beautyful crackles. |
