MASSIVE ISLAMIC NISHAPUR CERAMIC BOWL
A fine round Nishapur food bowl of exceptional execution and preservation. Very large bowl measuring 237 x 97 mm.

Beautyful stylized caligraphy and an ethernal pattern in the center. The bowl can be dated to the 9th-10th. century AD, Nishapur, Iran. Earthenware, engobe, underglaze slip-painted. The glace is a complete mulitude of small crackles - superb preservation!

This bowl, which was used to serve food, was done with artistic calligraphy in red-brown Kufic, on a white background.

The bowl represents the first revival of the traditional art due to the rise of the native Islamic dynasty of the Samanids. A most important bowl that shows the true glory of the simple artful style that owes much to the Sassanian art and to the earlier cultures of the Iran.

Condition: Superb! The bowl looks completely intact, there can be some very minor restoring, but very limited if any.
