Japanese Blue & White porcelain BOWL with a monk (wise man) fishing from a rock into the sea under a tree. Whimsical decorations on the sides with an unknown kiln mark in underglaze blue on the back. A beautifully modeled, with great detail (complete with private male parts) BIZEN, Japanese Shishi, lion-dog mythological animal almost always found at the gates of Buddhist temples. There is some slight damage to the back of the neck, the tail and both eyebrows. (see photos)but these damages are easy to live with considering that this is pre 1868! Circa: 1800-1840's. The number 75.1883 is written on the right lower foot. It was disacenssioned from the M. Strong Museum in Rochester, NY...

Two pages from a book published in Japan in 1908 were skillfully joined and hinged in Tokyo,Japan. The print depicts a rather dark skinned Sumo wrestler tangled up with his opponent whose face is obscured. Off to the side is a Kabuki-like actor with a mask (an archer) who is prodding the wrestlers. Very animated. The artist's name is "Kimustu." Condition is good, no foxing. Dimensions are 10.25" x 7.5" Circa: 1908. Matting and framing are available for a gift.

Japanese Arita porcelain BRUSH WASHER in a squat bee-hive form for the scholar's desk. The blue underglaze design depicts the ocean's edge with small houses and trees. It has a slightly raised circular foot and an everted rim. It has a 1 3/8" diameter at the rim, 3 3/8" = widest diameter, 2 3/4" at the foot and is 1 3/8" in height. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or hairlines, but there is a kiln flaw (star crack) in the center of the base...

Japanese 2 Panel screen, Suiboku-gwa (literally water & black ink) painting of a Plum Tree in early bloom in Febuary with a Sparrow about to land! This type of painting derived it's inspiration from the Zen doctrine of Buddhism. The background is gold leaf laid down overlapping paper squares, mounted on a wooden lattice frame.
