Japanese Blue & White porcelain PLATE with a scalloped edge, depicting in a Zen way the "older wiser monk," followed by his "apprentice," both together, yet both off in their own worlds! They are, of course, in nature, by the sea, with boughs of sheltering trees, distant mountains, roiling clouds and a sun or perhaps moon high in the sky. This plate was made prior to German artifical blue dyes, it's the real thing, cobalt. Unfortunately, this fine speciman was broken into two seperate pieces; repaired (not particularly skillfully,) in Japan but still worth owning and displaying. A classic. Circa 1840-1868. Obscured kiln mark in underglaze blue on the back. Dimensions are 12.25 inches (31.1 cms) x 2 inches (5 cms.)
