Japanese elongated rectangular (8 sided) porcelain BOX with domed lid...an unusual IMARI ceramic! This is a calligraphy BRUSH box, holding 3 brushes to dry with the lid in place! The base has two dividers with tree scallop shaped openings at the top and the lid has two sets of five holes at either end. The overglaze painting of two high court officials surrounded with peony flowers and leaves and birds and even two dragons coming together in the center of the lid! The inside is glazed a shiny white enamel and the base has a thin coat of enamel slip.
Beautifully executed, rich Imari colors and attention to detail and a most unusual Imari ceramic! Dimensions: 7 1/4" in length x 3 1/8" wide x 2 1/4" in height. Excellent condition: lid was restored, no chips, cracks or hairlines. Circa: late Edo 1840-1864.
