Chinese Cizhou white slip stonewear EWER, Song Dyn
Chinese CHIZOU white slip decorated stonewear EWER, SONG Dynasty with its trumpet neck, handle and spout covered with a white clay slip beneath a colorless glaze, the rim now bound with copper, the canted foot finished with a recessed base. Cizhou wares were usually thrown on a wheel which was made from a large and heavy stone and marks on the wares indicate that they were thrown very quickly. After the vessel was formed it was dipped into a white kaolin-tyoe slip over which a colorless transparent glaze was applied. The vessels were then fired in an imperfectly oxidized kiln fueled with coal until they were firmly contracted, though not as firmly as celadon and white porcelaneous ware. Cizhou ware originated as one of several imitators of DING WHITE WARE. As is the case with this beautifully shaped EWER, the surface is unevenly colored, as if water-stained. This is caused by impurities that have seeped through the craze overglaze surface to permeate the white powdered layer of slip underneath. Condition is almost perfect except for the "staining" mentioned above and a very slight loss of glaze (10%) on the tip of one section of the spout (see pixs) and a few isolated glaze bursts. Under professional inspection, there is no evidence of cracks, chips repairs or restorations! Dimensions: Height is 9.75 inches or (25 cms.) and the diameter of the base is 2 5/8 of an inch or 6.6 cms. and the diameter of the rim is 3.5 inches or 8.7 cms.
