Edo Period Lacquered Japanese Altar Table
A fine antique Japanese altar table known as, maejoku which is placed in front the image of the Buddha or Bodhisattva where a set of altar objects called gusoku are placed on the table. The usual set is either a flower vase, incense burner, and candle holder (this set is known as mitsu gusoku). In formal settings, a set of five is displayed and is known as go gusoku (where a pair of vases and candle holders are displayed). The style of displaying altar objects began with the development of the tokonoma or alcove in the 16th century. A triptych set hanging scroll is displayed and a vase, incense burner, and candle holder is placed in front of the scroll painting.

Table has no damage or wear on the lacquer after centuries of use. Accumulation of dust in the detail work and slight wear on the top of the table can be seen.

Age: 18th-19th century.

Size: Height: 9" Length: 24.5" Width: 5"
